ZAP (ZAPZ) announced today a breakthrough electric propulsion system that uses a new hydrogen fuel cell and lead-cobalt battery design developed by Apollo Energy Systems. Apollo has developed and patented an Alkaline Fuel Cell, an improved version of the early Alkaline Fuel Cells used by NASA in the Apollo Moon Mission. Apollo calls its Alkaline Fuel Cell the "Rolls Royce" of fuel cells, with a higher voltage, higher efficiency, and greater reliability than other types of fuel cells. FuelCell Energy, Marubeni and Kawasaki to Build and Market Direct FuelCell Power Plants in...
Fuelcell Energy Inc (FCEL) and its partner in Japan, Marubeni Corp., will enter into an agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries to become a packager of Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) power plants in Japan. Discussions for conclusion of the agreement are in the final stage. As part of this agreement, Kawasaki will purchase a DFC300A power plant from Marubeni, to be installed at the Kawasaki Akashi Works near Osaka, Japan, where it will undergo long-term evaluation and testing. This news and anticipation of earnings later this afternoon has FCEL up over 7% today with above average volume.
Ballard Announces $3.6 Million Follow-on Contract with Major Automaker
Ballard Power (BLDP) announced a $3.6 million contract with a major global automaker covering expanded technology benchmarking and evaluation activities. As part of this agreement, the automaker will evaluate the performance and capabilities of Ballard's current and advanced fuel cell technologies. This contract builds on the experience gained by the automaker from its initial purchase of Ballard® fuel cell products in 2003. Ballard has existing deals with DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Honda, Mitsubishi and Nissan. There is no indicatication which vendor they won the contract with.
Plug Power Expands GenCore Fuel Cell Product Offering
Plug Power Inc (PLUG) announced the availability of GenCore®5T24, a 24-volt, 5-kilowatt backup fuel cell system that will be marketed to wireless service providers. The GenCore 5T24 complements the Company's other available products within the GenCore platform; the 5B 48-volt for industrial applications and the 5T 48-volt for wireline/wireless applications, which began shipping late last year.

UPS puts fuel cell vans on the road
UPS on Thursday announced it was deploying three delivery vans that run on non-polluting hydrogen and fuel cells, and said it hopes to some day have zero-emission engines for its entire fleet of 88,000 vehicles. The three vans will be used in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Calif., and Ann Arbor, Mich. Once again, these Fuel Cell trucks are made by DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) and are using Ballard Power (BLDP) for the cell stack.

Modine Awarded Subcontract on Department of Energy Fuel Cell Mine Loader Project
Modine Manufacturing Co (MODI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract with Vehicle Projects, LLC of Denver to supply thermal management hardware for a U.S. Department of Energy vehicle development and demonstration project. The nearly $8.6 million project will develop, manufacture, and demonstrate a mine loader powered by a fuel cell, along with associated metal-hydride storage and refueling hardware. The group will develop a 23 metric-ton, 160 kW fuel cell-battery hybrid mine loader. Hydrogenics Unveils Toronto’s First Hydrogen Refueling Station
Hydrogenics Corp (HYGS) unveiled the first of four Hydrogenics' projects to be part of Toronto's Hydrogen Village. The unveiling of the Company's HyLYZER(TM) hydrogen refueler took place at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) as part of the CNE's Green Day event. Hydrogenics also announced it has received a CDN $4.25 million strategic investment from the Government of Canada's Hydrogen Early Adopters (h2EA) program that will help in establishing the four unique projects in which Hydrogenics will lead a consortium of partners. The total value of the projects is over CDN $10 million.
Honda Makes Scooters With Hybrid Engines, Fuel Cells
Honda Motor Co (HMC) said it has built scooters powered by fuel cells and gasoline-electric engines, extending the technology for the first time to two-wheeled vehicles. The automaker developed a scooter with a fuel cell-power plant the size of a normal 125 cubic centimeter gasoline engine as well as a so-called hybrid two-wheeler with a 50cc engine, Honda President Takeo Fukui told reporters at the company's research center in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo.
